It's 7 in the morning and the streets are crowded with men, women and children all adorned in their best clothes, making their way to the mosque. When the festival prayers are over, they shake their hands firmly together followed by an embrace, the famous mark among the Muslims to spread peace. Men are preparing for the slaughtering of the cattle, women are setting up the tables with assorted sweets and the children are being laden with many gifts from their aunts and uncles.
Yes, it's the day of the Muslim's festival, Eid Ul Adha, also known to most people as the Haj Festival, which fell on the 16th of October this year.
So what is so important about this day? And why is it known as the Haj festival?
Basically, Eid ul Adha is celebrated to mark the end of the annual pilgrimage to the holy land of Makkah, known as Haj.
But to be more specific, the day is celebrated in honour of the willingness of Prophet Abraham to slaughter his own beloved son for the sake of Allah, thus came the name Eid ul Adha (The Feast of Sacrifice). The story goes to end in the son being replaced by a lamb, introducing the act of slaughtering cattle on this particular day by Muslims all around the world.
Achievers, Kandy too reserved a few hours to celebrate this special day, producing a fine performance by the students and the teachers followed by a serving of refreshments that spun out to be the talk of the day. The organizers behind the splendid arrangement of the day's celebration certainly showed their fine skills as they brought out food, entertainment and talent which the audience enjoyed immensely, making it an evening to be remembered.
